What Is Biofilm?
Biofilm is a slimy layer of bacteria, algae, and other microorganisms that grows on the inside surfaces of your tubing, filters, and emitters. It feeds on light and the organic matter and nutrients in your water, and once it takes hold it both clogs emitters directly and harbors pathogens that threaten your crop. It’s the reason “just add nutrients” water lines get gummed up over time.

How to Prevent Clogs and Biofilm
Prevention is far easier than clearing a room full of clogged drippers. The essentials:
- Block the light. Biofilm and algae need light. Opaque lines — and opaque grey Schedule 80 headers instead of light-passing white pipe — starve them out.
- Start with clean water. RO and UV filtration cut the organics and microorganisms that feed biofilm before they reach your lines.
- Filter. A screen or disc filter catches sediment before it reaches emitters.
- Keep water moving. Stagnant water breeds biofilm; a design that maintains velocity — like a one-header layout — helps keep lines clean.
- Flush regularly. A flush valve at the end of each run lets you blow buildup out before it becomes a clog — do it at least every harvest.
How to Clear Clogged Emitters
- Flush the lines. Open your end-of-run flush valves and push clean water through at full pressure to clear loose debris and slime.
- Treat the buildup. For biofilm, a sanitizing flush; for mineral scale, an acid flush dissolves the deposits. Match the treatment to the cause.
- Replace stubborn emitters. Drippers that won’t clear are cheap to swap — another reason we like easy-to-replace PE tubing and emitters over hard-plumbed tables.
