What Reverse Osmosis Actually Does to Your Water

Reverse osmosis pushes source water through a semipermeable membrane that rejects the vast majority of dissolved solids — typically 90–99% depending on the membrane and operating pressure. How to Size an RO System to Your Daily Water Demand

This is where a lot of grows get burned: they buy a membrane rated for a headline GPD number and discover it can’t keep the reservoir full on a hot flush day. RO systems are rated in gallons per day (GPD), but that rating assumes ideal temperature and pressure. Real-world output is often lower, and it’s spread across 24 hours.

Work it backwards from your actual demand:

  • Estimate peak daily use. Add up your largest irrigation day plus reservoir top-offs. A canopy running high feed volume in late flower is your worst case, not your average.
  • Account for storage. If you have a large buffer tank, your RO unit can produce slowly around the clock. Small or no buffer means the system has to keep pace in real time — size up.
  • De-rate for reality. Cold source water and low line pressure cut output. Building in headroom of 20–30% over your calculated peak keeps you from running dry.
  • Match membranes to water quality. Higher-TDS source water and colder temps reduce effective production, so a “1,000 GPD” system on hard, cold well water may deliver noticeably less.

Blending and Remineralizing So You Don’t Strip Everything

Here’s the nuance most “just buy RO” advice skips: pure RO water is aggressive and mineral-empty. Feed it straight into a recipe that assumes tap-water cal-mag and you’ll see deficiencies fast. You have two levers to fix this.
