What Is Root Rot and Pythium?

Root rot is a decay of the root system caused by waterborne pathogens — most commonly Pythium and Phytophthora — water molds (oomycetes) often lumped in with fungi — plus true fungi like Fusarium. Pythium in particular loves warm water and an oxygen-starved root zone, where it spreads through the water and attacks roots across an entire irrigation system. Once established, it can move plant to plant fast.

How to Spot Root Rot

Root rot shows up both below and above ground:

  • Roots turn brown, slimy, and mushy — healthy roots are white and firm; rotted roots may slough off in your hand.
  • A foul, swampy smell from the root zone or reservoir.
  • Wilting even when moist — damaged roots can’t take up water.
  • Yellowing, stunting, and slow growth up top, often mistaken for a nutrient issue.

How to Prevent Root Rot

  4. Clean the whole system — flush and sanitize lines, emitters, and reservoirs so you’re not re-infecting healthy plants.

Can plants recover from root rot?

Does root rot only affect cannabis?
